![]() But as you scale up, you end up with oodles of dwarves all searching for jobs to do, so the dev has to implement locking (always tricky), so that they don't all beeline for the same job. This is all fine when you've got ten dwarves. If it finds one, it figures out a path that moves it to the start point of that job, and begins moving there. ![]() Assuming it's fed, watered, not sleepy, not on fire, not being attacked, and so on, it looks at its highest priority job type, and tries to find a job of that type to do. Dwarves have built-in priorities (eating, drinking, sleeping), and user-controllable priorities (what task types should be taken, and in what order.)Įach time a dwarf decides to do something, it runs through its internal list of priorities, searching for an available action that fits its highest current priority. ![]() Dwarf Fortress is the prototypical example that I know of, where each dwarf functions as an agent and mostly decides on its own what to do. um, not craze, exactly, but popular design technique. If anyone wants to pick it up, it's on GOG, that's where I've been playing itĪgent sims are kind of a recent. SimCity 3000 is just the right mixture of simplicity, modern design, and challenge to make it one of the best city builders to play even in 2021. I've casually played all of the SimCity games (except the newest one and the mobile one, which does mean I've played SimCity Societies, a lot of it actually) and SimCity Classic is neat but too basic, SimCity 2000 is playable for long periods of time but doesn't really reel me back in, SimCity 4 is a lot of fun and I can spend hours playing it for days on end, but sometimes it just gets so frustrating to either have your city run right or to just fill in all of the space. It's not as hard or overwhelmingly large as SC4 and more relaxing, which is nice sometimes. Of course, SC4 does SC3000's stuff just as good if not better in a lot of ways, but SC3000 just feels so satisfying. It might not be as raw high quality at SC4, it was leaps and bounds better looking than SC2000 and still holds up nicely as a sort of stylized thing today. It has this lovely 90s aesthetic with everything, from the exaggerated painting styles for the advisors, to the detailed albeit crunchy-looking texture on the city. A lot of times I go back to old games and realize how dated, ugly, or just not good a game really was, but not SC3000. I played it when I was a kid on a hand me down Windows 98, and I grew up playing that and a couple other sim games. I'm currently working on a series of videos about the SimCity series and I got to playing SimCity 3000 for the first time in a while, and the game is just absolutely incredible still.
